RE-writen essay of "Coney Island"

The poem "Coney Island" is basically about the author himself James I. Weil. As you read more into the poem, you'll realize it's not only a poem about a carnival, but also about life, life with its "Us and downs".

First off when you read this poem, line 2 "on roller coaster ups and downs" to me, it means life having its ups and downs; ups being good times and downs being bad times.

Another odd line or phrase is from lines 5-6 "now arms filled with dolls i threw so much for". This phrase tells me that it relates to life because in life, you spend money, you work, you give things up like line 6"I threw so much for" and for "now arms filled with dolls" meaning that the things you recieved after giving what you've got.

Last but not least, at lines 9-12 "and ask, how many more times around, i have, to catch that brass-ring-sun" At lines 9-10, he wonders how long he has; how many more days, weeks, etc. he has left "to catch that brass-ring-sun"; to catch his dreams. He wonders how much time he has left to catch his dreams.

At first when your reading this poem, you would wonder what the author is talking about other than a carnival, what was the point of writing this. But when you analyze each word and phrase, you can tell hes not only describing a carnival, but also life.

Querencia notes

Its the place where almost everyone becomes them-self by expresing each other through music. When ever i go in to the band room, the first thing that comes to mind is the smell of socks and feet in the shoe room because its the first room you go through before you enter the band room. As you enter the bandroom the feeling is the blast of air condition impact your face and then the loud sound of other students expresing themselves through their instruments!! I run all the way to my corner where i practice and basicly become the person who i really am
when i was in middle school, i usually went to the band room to just turn things in, check my grade, the usual stuff you would do for pretty much all your classes, and all we would really just do is do what the teacher says for us to do:"TURN TO PAGE 29 LESSON 2","CLAP THE RYTHM","TAP YOUR FEET", the usual.
i remembered a lecture our teacher told the whole class. it went something like this:" music isnt noise, its something that creates feelings/emotions in not only you, but in the audience. when you play music with feeling, you can really reach out into the audience and touch their hearts creating emotions in them without contact." it went something like that, but what he said was really true, it does reach out and touches peoples hearts and creates emotions in others.
it was a wednesday and my parents had to pick me up late, so i ended up staying in the band room for a while after school. as i stayed, the people i knew on the outside of the band room were totally different people inside. they were acting very different and i could never really see them the same way ever. i myself also started to notice some changes in the way i acted too.
i then realized that the band room is not just a place to practice and get an easy A, it was a place where not only me but others come to to express their thoughts, their feelings, to just enjoy themselves after a hard day of work. it was a place, a home for everyone in the music program that everyone was welcome to...

Rough draft essay: Laulau

Arriving at my grandma’s house all the way in Makakilo and first thing in mind: BIG DAY TODAY because me and my family always come early so we can set up for the Thanksgiving party which always happens every year and year its almost the same: Place is filled beyond the person limit, kids screaming and running around like trolls with stains on their shirts, aunties and uncle sharing stories, and drinking and etc. etc. But the one thing that’s always there is my aunties specially made Laulau that she brings homemade from the other side of the island!!
Well the one reason my auntie would always bring Laulau on special occasions like these is that it brings the whole family together and by whole family, I mean whole family from all over the place because usually we never get to see each other and at this time of the year it’s the only time we’ll ever get to see each other. Laulau is the one thing that’s always there at special occasions like these and it all started in the 80’s.
She moved to sunset in around 94’ and that’s when she pretty much started to make Laulau for the family. She didn’t really have anyone to help her with the Laulau so she had to experiment with what she had in the back yard and a bucket. She said she had made about 50 pieces in the small 25 gallon bucket and as she got better, she got bigger buckets so she make more for the family to compliment the feast. Although now, she’s able to bring coolers of Laulau for the family and I ask “Hey aunty, how do you make so much Laulau?”  and she replies “Well obviously you can tell I didn’t do all this by myself HAHAHA! Well I have help from your uncles and aunties that always come over to help me!”
When my aunty makes the Laulau, she needs a lot of supplies and people. So first, she orders a week early before Thanksgiving and has to take work off so she can have time to make enough for her relatives. She said buying all the supplies is really expensive until they had a friend “Deo” all the way up in Aiea that grew everything that they needed and she said that it was better and saved a lot of money. She also calls in for support from her family members, mostly the older ones because she says they have most of the experience and it brings the family together like I said before. After filling all the buckets with all the ingredients specially grown and non-processed, they steam it for 3 hours of hot “MADNESS” as she says. As they wait, they have a break and have refreshments that my auntie bought from the store and all the other guys drink with my uncle Allen. After every things done, they rap it up and stack them up in coolers and then an hour drive from Sunset all the way to Makakilo.
It was always about bringing the family together from start to finish. Meeting your old relatives, making new friends or even meeting new relatives you’ve never known before, the dish always brang the family together because rarely see each other .

My food choice: Lau Lau

My food choice was really hard because my parents didn't really know any family recipes that were passed down by generation except Lau Lau because my grandpa made in the mainland where my mom's family was born and then now, for almost all the parties we have as a family with all of our relatives, my aunty makes cases of lau lau for everyone!!
